Muscat: Lieutenant Commander Issa bin Salim Al Jahouri, commander of Shabab Oman II, told the Oman News Agency that the ship plays a pivotal role in cultural diplomacy, representing the Sultanate of Oman in international forums and ports in a manner befitting its esteemed global standing.

He explained that at every port and harbour the ship visits, it attracts thousands of visitors from around the world, offering an immersive Omani experience through cultural and tourism exhibitions, traditional musical performances, interactive meetings, official receptions and participation in international maritime events. These activities, he said, highlight Oman’s ancient seafaring history and the skills of its crew, presenting a civilised and humane image inspired by the legacy of past generations.

Al Jahouri noted that the message carried by Shabab Oman II, and its predecessor Shabab Oman, is rooted in a long-established Omani approach shaped by the great Sultans of Oman, who believed that peace and friendship are the strongest foundations for building lasting relations between nations and enhancing cultural understanding.

He added that once the ship docks, it transforms into a vibrant Omani cultural platform, opening its doors to visitors and resonating with traditional sea chants that blend the spirit of the ancient past with the energy of the present. Through these encounters, visitors come to realise that Oman is not merely a place on a map, but a living experience defined by generosity, authenticity and deeply rooted heritage.

The commander emphasised that the ship’s international voyages are also a valuable developmental experience for Omani youth, helping them build discipline, responsibility, leadership, communication skills and teamwork, while preparing them to face real-life challenges with patience and resilience.

Distinguishing Shabab Oman II from other sailing ships, Al Jahouri said it uniquely combines Omani authenticity with modern maritime technology. Equipped with advanced navigation and safety systems, the ship is capable of long-distance voyages while serving as Oman’s ambassador to the world.

He added that the vessel regularly participates in international tall ship festivals and races, earning awards and advanced positions that enhance Oman’s presence on the global maritime stage. Notably, Shabab Oman II is the only Arab ship representing the region in major international maritime forums, reflecting Arab culture and identity through its Omani crew, design inspired by 1840-era vessels, and its enduring message of peace and heritage.

Al Jahouri concluded by affirming that Shabab Oman II stands as a national and cultural symbol, embodying the pride of the Omani people in their rich maritime history and their ability to move confidently into the future without losing touch with their roots.
