NEW DELHI : A deadly car explosion near New Delhi’s iconic Red Fort on Monday has left 13 people dead and over 20 injured, sparking a nationwide investigation into what authorities suspect could be a terror-related incident.
The Cabinet observed a two-minute silence in memory of the lives lost and called the incident a heinous act of terror by anti-national elements.
In its resolution, the Cabinet described the explosion as a “heinous terror incident” that resulted in multiple fatalities and left several others injured. The Cabinet offered its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. It also lauded the swift and coordinated efforts of medical personnel, emergency responders, and citizens who acted with courage and compassion during the crisis.

Reaffirming India’s unwavering stance against terrorism, the Cabinet emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward acts of terror in all forms. It further appreciated the global outpouring of solidarity from other governments and praised the dedication and prompt response of India’s security agencies and authorities.
Faridabad Police traced the vehicle, a car with registration number DL 10 CK 0458, to Khandawali village. Investigators suspect that Dr. Umar Nabi, a Pulwama-based doctor, was the sole occupant of the car when it exploded. His associate, Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, was earlier arrested for allegedly running a white-collar terror module. Phone records show both men had visited the Red Fort earlier in January.
The Cabinet directed that the investigation into the incident be carried out with utmost urgency to ensure the perpetrators and their collaborators are brought to justice swiftly. Stressing national security and citizen safety, the Cabinet assured that the government remains vigilant and committed to protecting every Indian against such threats.
On Wednesday, authorities maintained heightened security across the capital, closing the Red Fort metro station and deploying police and paramilitary forces at all key entry and exit points.
The Delhi blast marks the second suspected terror attack in India this year, following the April assault in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 26 tourists.
