Oman, Arab nations align efforts for upcoming UN Environment Assembly

His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of the Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), represented Oman at the 36th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, held in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

NOUAKCHOTT : During the high-level meetings, HE Dr. Al-Amri held a series of discussions with his counterparts from across the Arab world, aimed at enhancing cooperation on shared environmental challenges and preparing for the upcoming UNEA-7, scheduled to take place from December 8 to 12.

In a meeting with Her Excellency Masouda Bint Baham Mohamed Laghdaf, Mauritania’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, both sides explored avenues for joint initiatives in biodiversity protection, pollution control, wildlife preservation, and the management of nature reserves. The two countries also agreed on closer coordination in preparation for UNEA-7.

HE Dr. Al-Amri also met with Her Excellency Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), to discuss Oman’s participation in anti-desertification programs and future collaboration under the framework of the UN Convention. Discussions centered on leveraging international expertise to advance Oman’s projects combating land degradation.

In another bilateral meeting, HE Dr. Al-Amri held talks with Her Excellency Kawthar Kouikou, Minister of Environment and Quality of Life of Algeria, focusing on cooperative efforts to address desertification and environmental sustainability across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.

A key meeting also took place with His Excellency Engineer Mansour bin Hilal Al-Mashiti, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia. The two officials reviewed the outcomes of the 35th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs and discussed the Green Middle East Initiative. They also examined Saudi Arabia’s leadership in hosting the upcoming COP16 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
