TEL AVIV : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he has instructed the military to launch “powerful strikes” in Gaza, escalating tensions and putting fresh strain on the fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire.

The order came after Israel accused Hamas of violating the truce by firing on Israeli forces in southern Gaza and returning the remains of a hostage previously declared recovered earlier in the war.

Netanyahu described the move as a “clear violation” of the ceasefire terms, which stipulate that Hamas must promptly return all Israeli hostage remains.

The renewed hostilities mark the most serious test yet of the fragile ceasefire, raising concerns about the possibility of a wider resumption of conflict in the region.
