MUMBAI : Born on June 25, 1951, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Satish Ravilal Shah hailed from a Kutchi Gujarati family from Mandvi. A graduate of St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and a trained actor from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Shah’s journey from theatre to television and cinema showcased his unparalleled versatility and enduring charm.
He was married to designer Madhu Shah since 1972. The couple shared over five decades together, a partnership defined by grace and quiet strength.
Shah’s career took flight with the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, where his portrayal of the eccentric Municipal Commissioner D’Mello remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved comic turns. Television soon became his stage of mastery — his roles in Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), where he played 55 different characters in 55 episodes, and as Indravadan Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004–2006, 2017), cemented his reputation as India’s king of situational comedy.
