MUSCAT : The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) participated in the Oman Research and Education Network Technology Summit (OTS25), organized by OMREN at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, under the patronage of H.E. Professor Dr. Rahma Ibrahim Al-Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. The event was attended by H.E. Dr. Abdullah Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, President of the Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence, along with a number of honorable officials, heads and deans of educational institutions, experts, researchers, and professionals in educational technology.
During the summit, Dr. Musab Alrawi, Director of the ICESCO Chair for AI Ethics at UTAS, presented a workshop titled “Before You Code: AI in Education Begins with Ethics,” which addressed the importance of the ethical dimension in applying artificial intelligence within education.
The workshop discussed the evolution of AI from a theoretical concept to a central element in learning and creativity, emphasizing the need to understand its ethical and human dimensions before programming or implementing it in educational institutions. It also highlighted that the adoption of AI in education should not be limited to technological advancement, but should be founded on human values and clear intentions that take into account the long-term impact on students and society.

Speaking about the ICESCO Chair for AI Ethics at UTAS, Dr. Alrawi stated that education should guide the trajectory of artificial intelligence, not be led by it. He added that the Chair, through its various programs and initiatives—including the AI in Education program—works to promote principles ensuring that technology complements human judgment rather than replaces it, and to maintain AI solutions that are transparent, fair, and aligned with human values.
This participation reflects the University of Technology and Applied Sciences’ commitment to strengthening its presence in specialized scientific forums and supporting initiatives related to ethics and governance in emerging technologies, contributing to the creation of a responsible and innovative educational environment aligned with the national digital transformation goals.
