His Excellency noted that technology has become an integral part of the centre’s work culture, explaining: “The integrated smart infrastructure, powered by artificial intelligence, has contributed to reducing response time and providing accurate and immediate data that helps support decision-makers.”
One notable achievement he mentioned is Oman’s ability to conduct an annual electronic general census of population, housing, and establishments at zero financial cost – a result of efficient electronic integration among government and semi-government entities, implemented by a small team of national experts.
This innovation has also paved the way for the ‘Family Expenditure and Income Survey’ project, which utilises AI and is the first of its kind globally, with results expected in 2026.
His Excellency Dr. Al Barwani further stressed that the Centre’s role goes beyond publishing numbers. “We also monitor public sentiment through opinion polls. Our aim is to combine data accuracy with a deep human perspective, strengthening public trust and enhancing dialogue between citizens and decision-makers.”
The Statistical Center for the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) also took part in celebrating World Statistics Day.
Her Excellency Intisar bint Abdullah Al Wahaibi, Director General of GCC-Stat, stated that the occasion represents global recognition of the essential role of statistics in policy development, sustainable progress, and building a better future.
She noted that this year’s celebration is especially meaningful as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, emphasizing the integral role statistics have played in the UN’s mission over the past eight decades.
Her Excellency She acknowledged the transformative impact of digital technologies, big data, and artificial intelligence on the field of statistics, offering opportunities for greater speed and precision, while also presenting challenges—particularly in managing large data volumes, ensuring quality, maintaining privacy, and guaranteeing equitable data access.
She also emphasized the importance of promoting statistical literacy across society, starting from early education and extending to media engagement and civil society participation. “Statistics must be seen not only as a governmental function but also as a life skill and a key to informed citizenship.”
She concluded by affirming that the Gulf and Arab regions possess significant potential for statistical advancement, supported by youth capabilities, growing digital infrastructure, and a strong drive for cooperation and knowledge exchange. These factors, she said, will contribute positively to the region’s overall development efforts.
World Statistics Day offers an opportunity to renew Oman’s commitment to improving data quality, strengthening multi-sectoral partnerships, and reinforcing the pivotal role of statistics in shaping national policy and adapting to global transformations, in alignment with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
