OSLO: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering efforts to promote democratic rights and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday.

The committee praised Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” and for her courage in pursuing justice and freedom despite years of political persecution.

Machado, one of the most prominent figures in Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement, has long been an outspoken critic of the country’s authoritarian leadership. Her recognition by the Nobel Committee highlights international support for peaceful democratic change in Venezuela.

The announcement comes after weeks of speculation over potential winners, with several analysts previously predicting that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s role in Middle East diplomacy could influence the decision — a notion now ruled out as the committee underscored its focus on “long-term commitment to democratic principles and peace.”
