STOCKHOLM : Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday, recognizing his “compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.”
Known for his dense, philosophical prose and haunting depictions of chaos and decay, Krasznahorkai has long been regarded as one of Europe’s most distinctive literary voices. His works, including Satantango, The Melancholy of Resistance, and Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming, explore themes of despair, endurance, and the human search for meaning amid disorder.
The Academy praised Krasznahorkai’s “unique narrative intensity” and his ability to transform bleakness into beauty through language and vision.
