NEW YORK : As the world watches ahead of Friday’s Nobel Peace Prize announcement, speculation is mounting around former U.S. President Donald Trump whose late involvement in the Gaza ceasefire has reignited debate over his global diplomatic legacy.

But in Oslo, experts say the outcome is already sealed. The Norwegian Nobel Committee confirmed its final meeting took place on Monday days before the truce was brokered. “The ceasefire came too late to influence this year’s choice,” said historian Asle Sveen, noting that deliberations are guided by confidentiality and long-established timelines.

Analysts point out that the Nobel Prize traditionally honors sustained peacebuilding rather than sudden or highly publicized interventions. “The committee looks for enduring efforts built on dialogue and cooperation, not a single breakthrough moment,” Sveen added.

Trump, nominated by Malta’s foreign minister for his “significant role” in advancing Middle East diplomacy, has also received vocal backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yet most observers remain unconvinced that the former president’s recent actions will sway the decision. “The nominations came after the deadline and hold no procedural weight,” said a former Nobel adviser.

In Norway, media outlets are preparing for global reactions, aware that a win for Trump would trigger both praise and outrage. “Any decision involving him would dominate headlines worldwide,” said one Oslo-based commentator.

For Trump, who has long sought recognition for his role in the 2020 Abraham Accords, the spotlight offers both validation and controversy. His supporters say the Gaza deal highlights his enduring influence; critics argue it underscores his transactional style of diplomacy.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced at 11:00 a.m. Oslo time (0500 GMT) on Friday. Whether or not Trump’s name is called, his renewed push for recognition has once again placed him at the center of the world’s most closely watched stage for peace.
