MUSCAT – The helpline – +1-202-550-9931 (also available on WhatsApp) – is intended strictly for emergency use and not for general consular inquiries, the embassy clarified in a statement shared on social media.
“Indian nationals seeking emergency assistance may call cell number +1-202-550-9931 (and WhatsApp). This number should be used only by Indian nationals seeking immediate emergency assistance and not for routine consular queries,” the Embassy stated on its X platform.
This move comes in the wake of a newly announced U.S. policy imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, which has sparked uncertainty among Indian professionals and families. Indian nationals account for a significant majority of H-1B visa recipients annually, and the sudden financial burden has led to widespread concern within the community.

According to U.S. officials, the new fee will only apply to fresh H-1B petitions and not to existing visa holders or those seeking renewals. A senior American administration official clarified that it is a one-time charge meant for new applicants, and those currently holding valid H-1B visas, whether residing in the U.S. or traveling abroad, will not be required to pay the fee or return immediately.
