ZURICH : The tournament is set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Applications poured in from 216 countries, led by fans from the three host nations. Strong demand also came from football powerhouses Germany, England, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, and Italy.

Calling it a “strong indication of interest,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the tournament, the first to feature 48 teams, would be “the largest, most inclusive, and most exciting event ever.”

Tickets for group-stage matches, priced from $60, will be allocated to selected applicants beginning September 29, with purchasing to start on October 1. FIFA cautioned, however, that the allocation does not guarantee availability, given the overwhelming demand.

Further ticketing phases will follow, both before and after the official group stage draw, scheduled for December 5 in Washington, D.C.
