Geneva: In a statement published on its official website, UNHCR revealed that since December 2024, more than 1.2 million Syrians have returned to their homeland, alongside 1.7 million internally displaced people who have gone back to their areas of origin. While these returns signal hope, UNHCR warned that the challenges ahead remain immense.
The Commission stressed that ensuring lasting stability requires urgent investment in basic services such as education, healthcare, housing, and livelihoods. Without these, it cautioned, Syria risks seeing fresh waves of displacement, undermining progress made so far.
Syria has been at the heart of one of the world’s largest refugee and displacement crises since 2011. UNHCR has registered more than 5.9 million Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, in addition to millions displaced internally.
