Manama: Carrefour has closed all of its stores in Bahrain, marking the end of the French retailer’s presence in the kingdom. The move follows similar exits in Oman and Jordan earlier this year.
Majid Al Futtaim, the Dubai-based conglomerate that holds the exclusive rights to operate Carrefour in the region, announced the closure on social media without providing specific reasons. In its place, the company is introducing its homegrown grocery brand HyperMax, which will take over six former Carrefour locations across Bahrain.
The new retail chain is designed to focus on strengthening local supply chains. According to Majid Al Futtaim, HyperMax in Bahrain will create jobs for more than 1,600 employees and work with over 250 local farmers, suppliers, and producers to stock its shelves.

HyperMax already operates in Jordan and Oman with a network of 44 stores, and its expansion into Bahrain is part of the company’s strategy to reshape its grocery business in key markets.
Majid Al Futtaim Retail continues to manage Carrefour operations across 12 markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, but the group is now pivoting towards its proprietary HyperMax brand in select countries.
