KABUL – The German Research Centre for Geosciences reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometres.

Local officials said hundreds of people were feared dead after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan in a mountainous area near the border with Pakistan.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, located near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. In October 2023, an earthquake struck Herat province in western Afghanistan, killing at least 2,400 people.
