Suva: Oman participated in its capacity as President of the upcoming United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7).

Over four days of intensive discussions, ministers and officials focused on protecting coasts, marine ecosystems, and nature reserves, tackling pollution, reducing single-use plastics, managing waste, and combating climate change and desertification.

Leading Oman’s delegation, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, underlined the critical importance of the forum in light of mounting global crises. “The past year witnessed an unprecedented increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, which caused massive losses of life and property, and led to the displacement of large numbers of people across the region,” he said.

He emphasized that the forum serves as a preparatory platform for the Seventh Session of UNEA, to be held in Nairobi in December under the theme “Promoting Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet.”

Highlighting regional progress, HE Dr. Al Amri noted that 98 countries had submitted their first transparent progress reports on climate action, while six nations presented nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement.

He urged member states to focus on four priority areas: harnessing science for action, supporting inclusive cooperation, mobilizing resources and partnerships, and building circular and resilient systems to address future challenges.

The forum also discussed advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular focus on food security, climate resilience, and environmental protection. The outcomes will help shape regional positions and priorities for UNEA-7 later this year.
