DUBAI : The Asian national was originally convicted by Abu Dhabi’s federal criminal court after undercover officers caught him delivering a car trunk full of Captagon on behalf of a trafficker based outside the UAE. He admitted to receiving Dh5,000 per delivery and confessed to having carried out multiple similar transactions.
The trial court had unanimously sentenced him to death, a ruling later upheld on appeal and by the Federal Supreme Court. However, the public prosecutor challenged the decision, noting that the judicial panel that read the verdict was not the same panel that heard the case, a violation of legal procedure. The Supreme Court agreed and ordered a retrial.
In the new proceedings, the defendant denied the charges, questioning the validity of the search warrant and claiming weak intelligence. The court rejected his defense, citing police surveillance evidence that confirmed his role in trafficking.
