TOKYO – Speaking at the African Development Conference in in Tokyo, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the urgency of halting further violence. “It is imperative to urgently reach a ceasefire in Gaza to avoid further loss of life and destruction resulting from any military operation targeting the city,” he said.

The UN Secretary-General also called on Israel to reverse its decision to expand the construction of an “illegal” settlement in the West Bank.

The renewed UN appeal comes as diplomatic efforts, led by several countries, are underway to broker a temporary ceasefire agreement that would include a partial prisoner exchange. While Hamas has welcomed the proposal, Israel’s final response remains unclear or pending.
