MUSCAT – According to a statement from the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), the court sentenced the defendant to terms of imprisonment and imposed financial penalties after several consumers filed complaints with the Directorate General for Consumer Protection in North Al Batinah Governorate. The complaints concerned a business specialising in the manufacture and installation of doors, windows, and glass partitions, which reportedly failed to fulfil service agreements within the specified contractual periods.

Following investigations by the Directorate and the Public Prosecution in Sohar, the cases were referred to the competent court. The court found the establishment guilty of breaching Article 23 of the Consumer Protection Law, which states: “The supplier shall be obliged to provide the service to the consumer properly and in conformity with its nature and shall guarantee the service rendered for a period proportionate to its nature. In the event of breach, the supplier shall be obliged to refund the value of the service, or provide compensation for the deficiency therein, or re-perform the service properly, in accordance with the provisions stipulated in the Regulation.”

Accordingly, the court sentenced the defendant to imprisonment and imposed financial penalties.
The Directorate General for Consumer Protection Authority in North Al Batinah Governorate emphasises, through these judgments underscore the obligation upon suppliers and service providers to abide by the principles of credibility, transparency, and integrity in their dealings with consumers, and also to comply with the duties prescribed under the Consumer Protection Law.
