CAIRO – In a statement issued, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit affirmed that the principle of state monopoly over arms is a fundamental principle of sovereignty that may not be ignored or violated under any pretext.

He stressed that the Lebanese government’s decision to allow the army a period of time to implement its mandate on the ground should be met with the cooperation and support by all Lebanese factions who are committed to the country’s sovereignty and independent decision-making.

He also underscored the importance of international involvement, urging influential powers to apply pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Lebanese territory and cease airstrikes inside Lebanon.

Aboul Gheit emphasized that the full and accurate implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024 remains the only viable path to restoring peace across Lebanese territory.
