MUSCAT : The show, titled Katha Parayum Chithrangal (A Unique Story of Colours and Canvases), promises a vibrant audio-visual experience celebrating the timeless legacy of the celebrated painter.
Directed by renowned Indian stage director Sunil Kumar Krishnan Nair, the 165-minute production brings together over 120 actors and 100 backstage crew members from Muscat. The Malayalam version of the show will be staged on August 22, followed by a Hindi adaptation, Bolti Tasveerein – Rangon aur Canvas ke Zariye Khulti Kahani, on August 23. Both versions aim to depict the life and art of Raja Ravi Varma, whose works revolutionised Indian painting by blending Western techniques with Indian subjects, especially mythological and royal figures.
The production incorporates 71 carefully curated scenes drawn from Ravi Varma’s most iconic paintings, including depictions of Shakuntala, Hamsa Damayanti, and the Galaxy of Musicians. Set to a soundtrack composed by Rony Raphael and Rama Varma Thampuran, a descendant of the Kilimanoor royal family, the show combines live performance, dramatic lighting, and multimedia visuals to tell the story of Varma’s creative genius and personal struggles.

Director Sunil Kumar Krishnan Nair said, “We aim to introduce Raja Ravi Varma’s genius to the younger generation and revive his artistic spirit in a contemporary way. To my knowledge, Oman has never seen a live drama show of this scale. We are telling stories through colour, canvas and soul, just as Ravi Varma did.”
Produced by Bhavalaya and conceptualised by Dr. J Retnakumar, the show is presented by Global Events. It also features contributions from Indian film star Moksha and international artists overseeing sets, costumes, makeup, and choreography. A painting competition inspired by Ravi Varma’s works will also be held in early August as part of the larger cultural initiative.
The performance seeks not only to honour the legacy of Raja Ravi Varma but also to spark cultural dialogue and foster appreciation for classical Indian art among Oman’s diverse communities.
