TOKYO – The agreement was announced during a meeting in Scotland on Sunday between U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

As part of the deal, the United States will impose a 15 percent tariff on EU goods, half the rate previously threatened by President Trump, with implementation set to begin on August 1.

Following the news, investor attention is also turning toward upcoming corporate earnings and central bank policy meetings in the United States and Japan.

The euro stabilised at $1.1763, marking a 0.2 percent increase in Asian trading. It also climbed 0.2 percent to 173.78 yen. The U.S. dollar gained ground on Friday, bolstered by strong economic data that suggested the Federal Reserve might delay further interest rate cuts. However, both the Fed and the Bank of Japan are widely expected to maintain current interest rates at their policy meetings this week. Market participants will closely watch official statements for clues about future monetary policy directions.

The dollar was steady at 147.68 yen, while the dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of major currencies, slipped 0.1 percent to 97.534.
Meanwhile, the British pound traded at $1.34385, down about 0.1 percent. The Australian dollar registered $0.6576, up 0.2 percent, while the New Zealand dollar was steady at $0.6019.
