TOKYO – Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner, Komeito, needed to win 50 seats in addition to the 75 they already hold to reach the target.
With two seats still to be decided, the coalition won only 46 seats.
The loss is another blow to Ishiba’s coalition, leaving it in the minority in both chambers after its defeat in October’s House of Representatives elections.
