RUIDOSO: Three people have lost their lives in the village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, following heavy rainfall that caused sudden flash flooding.

Up to 8.8 centimetres (3.5 inches) of rain fell in a short period, sending the Ruidoso River rolling to historic levels. Local officials confirmed on Tuesday evening that a man and two children had been swept away by the floodwaters and did not survive.

The situation has since stabilised, with water levels now declining.

This tragedy follows the devastating flooding in neighboring Texas, where at least 111 people have been confirmed dead, according to the most recent figures released by US media. Texas Governor Greg Abbott said on Tuesday that 161 people remain missing in just one county.
