MIAMI: The English side opened the scoring early with Cole Palmer finding the net in the 16th minute, giving Chelsea an early edge in a tightly contested quarter-final. Palmeiras responded just after the break, as Estevao Willian netted the equalizer seven minutes into the second half.
With the match appearing destined for extra time, a costly own goal in the 83rd minute handed Chelsea the lead once again — and ultimately, the win.
Chelsea will now face Fluminense in the semi-finals. The Brazilian side advanced earlier with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in the tournament’s opening quarter-final.
