According to early reports, Jota and his brother André, also a professional footballer, were both present when the accident occurred. The two were travelling together when their vehicle turned off the road around 12:30 local time in the Zamora area and burst into flames.
Jota had just recently tied the knot with his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, only two weeks before the crash. He is survived by his wife and their three children.
Jota was an important contributor to Liverpool’s recent Premier League success, featuring in twenty-six league matches and scoring six goals in the title-winning campaign.
