Brussels : Liberty Media Corporation has received final approval from the European Commission to acquire MotoGP from the current rights holder, Dorna Sports, in a deal valued at approximately €4.3 billion.
The acquisition, first announced earlier this year, had been under review by European antitrust authorities due to concerns about potential competition issues. However, after a thorough investigation, the Commission concluded that the deal does not raise any significant concerns regarding market dominance or reduced competition in the motorsports media and broadcasting sector.
Under the terms of the agreement, Liberty Media will acquire an 84% stake in MotoGP, while Dorna Sports’ management will retain the remaining 16%. With this move, Liberty Media adds another crown jewel to its growing motorsport portfolio.
The company, known for transforming Formula 1’s global reach and digital engagement since acquiring it in 2017, is expected to bring a similar strategy to MotoGP, focusing on fan engagement, digital expansion, and global branding.
Greg Maffei, Liberty Media’s President and CEO, stated that the company is thrilled to officially commence Liberty’s partnership with Carmelo Ezpeleta and his excellent management team.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, will remain in his current role, ensuring continuity in the management of MotoGP operations. Ezpeleta welcomed the approval and expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential. The deal is expected to be finalized by July 3, 2025, at the latest.
