Muscat: The first phase in February will be mandatory, while a second optional phase in May will offer students a chance to improve their scores.
The move, officially announced on Wednesday by CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, follows the board’s approval of new norms that were open to public feedback earlier this year. “The first phase will be conducted in February and the second in May. Results will be declared in April and June respectively,” Bhardwaj confirmed.
Students will be allowed to improve their performance in up to three subjects—science, mathematics, social science, and languages—during the optional second phase. However, internal assessments for Class 10 will still be held only once during the academic year.

The policy also provides flexibility for winter-bound schools, allowing students in those institutions to choose either phase for appearing in the board exams.
As per the updated guidelines, both exam phases will cover the full year’s syllabus, and the overall examination structure will remain unchanged. The better of the two scores will be considered final.
This change is rooted in the vision of NEP 2020, which aims to eliminate the “high-stakes” nature of board exams and reduce students’ dependence on coaching classes. The policy encourages a more holistic, student-centered approach to assessment by allowing students multiple opportunities to perform their best.
