MOSCOW : The breakthrough involves the electrochemical synthesis of heterocyclic nitrogen rings — unique compounds with molecules containing a closed cycle of two or more nitrogen atoms. For the first time, researchers used electric current as an environmentally safe oxidizer, leading to the creation of “meiotic molecules” — compounds that are electrically neutral yet possess both positive and negative charges.
These newly synthesized compounds offer high thermal resistance, making them suitable as sustainable fuel alternatives for the aviation sector and for launching small spacecraft, such as satellites and scientific probes, into low-Earth orbit.
Leonid Vershtat, director of the Laboratory of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds, stated that these compounds also hold promise for use in the mining industry, particularly in the efficient extraction of mineral ores. Additionally, their photocatalytic properties could open avenues in green chemistry and material sciences.
