AHMEDABAD : The aircraft came down in a densely populated residential area, sparking a massive fire and widespread panic.

According to city police officials, there appear to be no survivors from the crash. The Boeing 787 aircraft, which carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian passenger, went down just five minutes into its journey. The crash site — a residential neighborhood with offices and homes — has reportedly suffered additional casualties.

“There appears to be no survivor in the crash,” Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed. He added that more deaths are feared in the locality, which includes a nearby medical college.

Another post from the official page by the Ahmedabad Police also confirmed that over 25 have been injured, which according to their age hint at the medical students from BJ Medical College.

Social media footage from the site showed plumes of black smoke rising into the sky, with locals rushing to aid first responders amid burning debris.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow and directed urgent rescue and relief efforts. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah are en route to Ahmedabad to personally oversee the emergency response.
