CAIRO: Speaking under the theme “Raising Awareness of the Importance of Sustainability in the Arab Region,” Aboul Gheit said that the path to a secure and prosperous Arab future is deeply tied to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all their economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

In his speech, marking the Arab Sustainability Day 2025, Aboul Gheit said that choosing this year’s celebration under the theme “Raising Awareness of the Importance of Sustainability in the Arab Region” reflects a deep understanding that sustainability cannot be achieved through policies and projects alone, but rather requires comprehensive societal awareness and a general culture that we seek to develop until it becomes deeply rooted in the behavior of individuals and communities.

He explained that the League of Arab States has paid great attention to sustainable development issues, recognizing the importance of linking the present to the future, the need to strike a balance between the requirements of economic growth, environmental conservation, and the promotion of social justice.

He pointed out that the Arab League has launched numerous initiatives and projects, in cooperation with various regional and international partners, with the aim of devoting the concept of sustainability and integrating it into policies and plans at the level of joint Arab action and at the national level of member states. He stated that the Arab region continues to suffer from armed conflicts and internal disputes, which have exhausted our peoples, depleted our resources, and negatively impacted the development process.

He emphasized that sustainable development is not the exclusive domain of certain countries, and that efforts must be made to ensure that no one is left behind. He said, “Education must not stop, water must not be cut off, and healthcare must not be absent. Development in times of crisis is a tool for survival and a foundation for building peace.”

He stressed that, despite the challenges, the Arab nation possesses the capabilities, resources, and will to overcome crises and build a prosperous future. He stressed that it is imperative to adhere to the goals of sustainable development, instill a spirit of optimism, action, and hope in future generations, and unleash the latent energies of the Arab region to maximize the potential of the enormous resources available to address common challenges.
