LONDON : Hailing from Karnataka, Banu Mushtaq is the first Kannada author to win the annual Booker Prize given to the best English-translated fiction. She has won the Prize along with her translator Deepa Bhasthi.

The book is a collection of 12 short stories that capture the everyday lives of Muslim women in Karnataka. Originally published between 1990 and 2023, ‘Heart Lamp’ is the first book in Kannada to receive this prestigious international award at a ceremony held in London.

The Booker International Prize is a literary award given to fiction writers. It used to be awarded every two years, but since 2016, it has been awarded annually.

Last year, the German novel “Kairos” by Jenny Erpenbeck, translated by Michael Hoffman, won the International Booker Prize.
