MUSCAT : This global annual event aims to highlight the importance of internal auditing in promoting transparency, governance, and operational efficiency across both public and private sectors.
Internal auditing is recognised as a cornerstone of good governance and a vital mechanism for managing risk and ensuring regulatory compliance. As part of the month’s activities, the SAI is reaffirming its commitment to supporting internal audit functions across entities subject to its oversight.

Imad bin Abdullah Al Shanfari, Director of Internal Audit at the State Audit Institution, explained that internal audit departments serve as the “first line of defence” in institutional operations. “Internal auditing provides independent and objective assurance regarding the effectiveness of risk management, governance, and control processes. This, in turn, helps institutions achieve their goals more effectively and efficiently,” he stated.
Al Shanfari highlighted that internal audit is essential in identifying gaps and vulnerabilities that may affect institutional performance. By implementing the recommendations of internal auditors, organizations can improve operational performance, reduce costs, and increase overall efficiency.
The SAI has demonstrated its ongoing support for internal audit departments through continuous professional development initiatives. These include year-round training programmes aimed at enhancing the capabilities of audit personnel within government entities, as part of broader efforts to protect public funds and improve resource utilization.
In line with its commitment to strengthening internal audit practices, the SAI issued a series of internal audit guides in 2015. These include the General Guide to Internal Audit Methodology for ministries and government units, the Internal Audit Procedures Manual (Financial and Compliance), and a Guide to Operational and Strategic Audit Tools.
