ZURICH: FIFA confirmed the move on Friday following unanimous approval by the FIFA Council. The expansion mirrors the format adopted by the men’s tournament, which will also feature 48 teams beginning with the 2026 edition.

“After consultation with the confederations and other stakeholders, and given the impressive recent strides made by women’s football around the world, the FIFA Council unanimously decided to expand the number of teams participating in the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48, starting with the 2031 edition,” FIFA said in a statement.
