DUBAI: According to new data from the UAE Ministry of Interior, a staggering 409,305 traffic fines were issued in 2024 for slow driving violations, up sharply from 300,147 in 2023. An overwhelming 99% of these — 409,059 fines — were recorded in Abu Dhabi alone.

The violations targeted motorists who failed to comply with minimum speed requirements or obstructed faster vehicles in overtaking lanes. Officials warned that such behaviour not only frustrates fellow drivers but also heightens the risk of road accidents.

Elsewhere, fines were significantly lower: Dubai recorded 192 cases, followed by Sharjah (41), Ras Al Khaimah (6), Umm Al Quwain (4), and Ajman (3). Fujairah reported no violations.

Under federal traffic law, motorists caught driving below the minimum speed limit face a fine of Dh400. The regulation ensures slower drivers remain in the right-hand lanes, leaving left lanes clear for overtaking — a critical part of maintaining traffic flow.

In a bid to enhance road safety, the UAE implemented updates to its traffic law on March 29. Executive regulations are expected within six months to further clarify lane-specific speed rules and enforcement procedures.

Some motorists have called for clearer definitions of minimum speeds across lanes and stricter accountability for slow drivers in accident-prone zones.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Police have intensified digital awareness campaigns, urging drivers to stick to the right-hand lanes if driving slowly, yield to faster vehicles in overtaking lanes, and avoid cruising in the far-left lane — designated exclusively for passing.

Authorities also reminded the public that tailgating and aggressive driving in response to slow vehicles are equally dangerous and can lead to serious accidents.
