DUBAI: In a precautionary response to the April 24 terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian airlines have started rerouting international flights that would typically pass over Pakistan, particularly affecting routes between North India and the UAE.

Akasa Air confirmed its decision to reroute flights, citing safety concerns. They confirmed that they proactively decided to reroute any flights expected to fly over Pakistan airspace as a precautionary measure, noting that the change is unlikely to significantly impact operations or inconvenience passengers. The airline will continue to assess the situation daily.

SpiceJet, while yet to issue a formal advisory, has also rerouted its flights from North India to the UAE via alternative paths. A spokesperson confirmed that aircraft would carry additional fuel to accommodate longer flying times, but maintained that the move had “no significant impact on flight schedules.”

India’s largest carriers, Air India and IndiGo, are also facing delays. Air India acknowledged that flights to or from North America, the UK, Europe, and the Middle East would now follow extended routes. IndiGo similarly reported operational impact due to Pakistan’s “sudden announcement of air space closure.”

The rerouting is expected to result in increased travel durations and a potential short-term rise in airfares, with industry sources estimating a hike of 8 to 12 per cent on affected routes.

In a related effort to manage the ongoing situation, India’s Civil Aviation Ministry operated 110 flights—including eight additional services—connecting Srinagar Airport to evacuate stranded tourists. Over 14,000 passengers were handled on Thursday alone.
