BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has said his country is “not afraid,” in his first public statement on Friday on the escalating trade war with the United States, as Beijing increased tariffs on US goods to 125%.

The tariff hike is the latest in a tit-for-tat battle between the world’s two largest economies, after Trump raised tariffs on China to 145%.

“For over 70 years, China’s development has relied on self-reliance and hard work — never on handouts from others, and it is not afraid of any unjust suppression,” Xi said.
