MUSCAT: Qatar on Tuesday welcomed talks between Iran and the United States scheduled to be held in Oman on Saturday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed talks were set for Saturday, in Oman, but referred to them as “indirect high-level talks”. Iranian state media later reported that Araghchi would meet the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, with Oman acting as a mediator.

In a statement issued, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “hope that the talks will lead to a sustainable agreement that enhances security, stability, and peace in the region and opens new horizons for regional cooperation and dialogue.”

Qatar also appreciated Oman for its diplomatic efforts aimed at bringing the views of the two parties closer together. “At the same time, it affirms the State of Qatar’s firm belief that dialogue is the best option for resolving international crises and conflicts, and its support for all regional and international efforts aimed at establishing peace and enhancing cooperation between countries to achieve global security and stability,” the statement added.
