WASHINGTON: The announcement comes amid reports from Axios that White House officials are finalizing plans for a mid-May visit to Saudi Arabia, aimed at reaffirming U.S. ties with Gulf allies and recognizing a massive investment pledge by Riyadh.

Trump said the Kingdom is expected to double its 2017 investment promise of $450 billion, committing $1 trillion in new investments in U.S. industries.

While Trump highlighted economic cooperation, he made no mention of Saudi Arabia’s role in potential peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, despite earlier speculation the Kingdom could host a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump has expressed optimism about a ceasefire but noted recent frustrations with Putin’s stance.
