MUSCAT : In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kaushal offered a glimpse into the emotional journey behind portraying one of history’s most resolute figures and revealed why the story’s heart-wrenching end still echoes through the centuries.

“Whoever knows the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj would know how it ends… But it’s about the ‘how’ part of it. I still can’t fathom how a human being can go through all that and not give up what he stands for,” said Vicky Kaushal, recalling the demands of the story and its pivotal scenes.

Historians note that Sambhaji Maharaj, son of the famed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was brutally tortured for weeks before being executed at the hands of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Chhaava is based on the Marathi novel of the same name by Shivaji Sawant and promises a degree of historical authenticity rarely seen in mainstream Hindi cinema. It is written by Shivaji Sawant. While Vicky Kaushal will play the role of Sambhaji in the Laxman Utekar film, Akshaye Khanna will take on the role of Aurangzeb. The film will also star Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Rashmika Mandanna and Diana Penty in important roles.

Focusing on Sambhaji Maharaj’s life and valiant stand, the film aims to carve out the warrior king’s rightful place in the spotlight—a figure too often eclipsed by his legendary father.

Shooting these moments together, the actor described entering “a trance” that challenged him like never before. “I’m happy we shot it all together when that chunk came,” he continued. “As an actor, that was something completely new to me.”

Vicky Kaushal made his Bollywood debut in 2012 with a small role in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ but his breakthrough role came three years later in ‘Masaan’. Since then, he has been the male lead in some exceptional Hindi films from ‘Raazi’ to ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’.

Kaushal, who marks his 10th year in the industry in 2025, underlined the timeless significance of his latest role, saying, “I guess that’s why this story needs to be told 350 years later… remembered and celebrated for the next 350 years also. Be it through this film, a book, a song or any art form.”
