MUSCAT: The release, which came Friday, arrives as competition in the AI landscape heats up, particularly following China’s DeepSeek unveiling its open-source model, R1.

The o3-mini model, part of OpenAI’s latest o3 lineup, was first announced in December alongside a more powerful version, o3, which is expected to roll out soon. OpenAI has positioned o3-mini as a lightweight yet capable AI, answering intricate questions across coding, math, and science.

The timing of the launch is no surprise—OpenAI had already planned for a late January release—but it comes amid industry buzz over DeepSeek’s R1, which reportedly matches or outperforms leading U.S. AI models in several key benchmarks, including mathematical problem-solving and general knowledge queries. Notably, R1 was developed at a fraction of the cost of rival models, raising fresh debates about AI pricing and value.

OpenAI, which is in discussions for a staggering $40 billion funding round at a $300 billion valuation, is moving swiftly to maintain its edge. The company said o3-mini is now accessible via its ChatGPT chatbot for both free and ChatGPT Plus users, as well as those subscribing to its Pro and Team services. The model is also available through OpenAI’s API, with enterprise users set to gain access next week.
