DAMASCUS: Sheikh Tamim was received at Damascus International Airport by Syria’s new president, Ahmad Al Shara, according to the Qatar News Agency. The visit comes just hours after Mr. Al Shara was officially declared Syria’s leader and tasked with forming a transitional legislative council.
The Gulf nation, which was a long-time supporter of the armed uprising that toppled Assad in December, has been moving quickly to re-establish ties with Syria’s new administration. Earlier this month, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman visited Damascus, and Doha announced plans to reopen its embassy after more than 13 years of diplomatic severance.
Qatar is reportedly considering financial assistance to Syria’s new government, including helping fund a sharp increase in public sector wages pledged by Mr. Al Shara’s administration. The new leadership faces significant hurdles, including stabilizing the country after 13 years of civil war and securing funds for reconstruction efforts.

Syria’s conflict came to an abrupt end last month when rebels led by Mr. Al Shara’s Hayat Tahrir Al Sham (HTS), with support from Turkish forces, swept through the country and seized Damascus, forcing Assad to flee to Moscow.
