A Boy Called Christmas (Netflix)
There was a boy named Christmas. On Christmas Eve, Aunt Ruth (Maggie Smith) travels to London to see her recently deceased niece and nephews. There, she tells them about Nikolas (Henry Lawfull), a youngster who lives in Finland’s woods with his father Joel (Michiel Huisman). Nikolas and his pet mouse Miika (voiced by Stephen Merchant) go out to discover the legendary world of Elfhelm, where magic is supposedly present when the monarch offers a bounty to anyone who can bring hope back to the kingdom after a harsh winter. Could Nikolas, or Christmas as his mother nicknamed him, be the one to rescue the day after he made friends with a reindeer and numerous others along the way?
Christmas Inheritance (Netflix)
A city resident becomes stranded in a little village, where they are initially irritated and ultimately won over. It’s a traditional Christmas scenario. Eliza Taylor plays the pampered city girl Ellen in this variation on Ernie Barbarash’s holiday subgenre. Her CEO father takes her to his little New England birthplace for Christmas to see if she can take up her CEO job. She encounters Jake (Jake Lacy) and his aunt Debbie (Andie MacDowell) there, and their giving influence alters her viewpoint.
The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix)
Who would have thought Kurt Russell was destined to portray Santa Claus? In his 2018 Yuletide adventure, Clay Kaytis plays a Saint Nick who, when his sleigh is broken and his bag of gifts is misplaced in the middle of Christmas Eve night, has to work with two children to salvage the holiday before dawn. Goldie Hawn, Russell’s real-life partner, plays Mrs. Claus in the Chris Columbus-directed follow-up.
The Princess Switch (Netflix)
Are you up for another marathon of movies? In Mike Rohl’s Princess Switch trilogy, Vanessa Hudgens, an American pastry maker, participates in a Christmas baking competition in the fictional Belgravia. There, she meets the prince’s fiancée, who is also Vanessa, and is startled to learn that they appear to be similar. Who could pass up the chance to exchange a few moments of their lives? Then, with the sequels Switched Again and Romancing the Star, who could not want to pursue the narrative of the lookalikes further?
The holiday season is almost at its end, and if you have been closely following the Netflix list to satiate your soul with Christmas classics, then Amazon Prime has some classics up its sleeves to make sure you cuddle up with your loved ones and never leave the holiday spirit.
All aboard the magic train with ‘The Polar Express’ (Amazon Prime)
This 2004 animated classic isn’t just for kids—it’s an adventure that stirs up a little magic in all of us. Follow a young boy as he boards a mysterious train bound for the North Pole, led by the one and only Tom Hanks (who plays multiple roles!). The motion capture animation combined with the heartwarming story of friendship and belief makes The Polar Express a must-watch, no matter how old you are.
Home Alone 1 and 2: The classic that keeps on giving (Amazon Prime)
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a little Home Alone, would it? This 1990 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin as the cheeky Kevin McCallister has been making us laugh—and cringe—since its release. Watching Kevin outwit a pair of burglars is the perfect mix of festive fun and a reminder that sometimes, being left alone isn’t the worst thing that could happen (at least, not for Kevin!). Cue the iconic screams and booby traps.
Die Hard: Yes, it’s a Christmas movie! (Amazon Prime)
Hold onto your seatbelts because it’s time for Die Hard. While some may debate if it qualifies as a Christmas classic, Bruce Willis’ action-packed thriller set during a Christmas party is filled with enough explosions, suspense, and holiday spirit to win over any doubters. Sometimes, the best way to celebrate the season is with a little bit of chaos. And let’s face it—nothing says Christmas like a good ol’ hostage rescue mission.
The Grinch who stole…and then saved Christmas (Amazon Prime)
Whether you prefer the live-action version or the classic animated tale, The Grinch has cemented itself as a staple of holiday viewing. In the 2018 animated version, the Grinch is back at it—trying to steal Christmas from the merry town of Whoville. But as we know, his heart grows three sizes in the end, leaving us with a story of redemption, generosity, and the real meaning of Christmas. And honestly, who doesn’t love a good “heart grown three sizes” moment?
Little Women: A timeless story for the holidays (Amazon Prime)
Though Little Women isn’t technically a “holiday movie,” its themes of family, love, and growth make it the perfect film for a cozy night in. Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation breathes new life into Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 novel, with Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, and Florence Pugh bringing the March sisters to vivid life. The movie explores the timeless struggle for independence and the complex role women play in society, a relevant theme for both then and now. Plus, it’ll make you appreciate your own family in ways you didn’t expect.
Until we see you again next year with even more movie miracles and entertainment, here’s to a splendid new year and happy holidays!
