MUSCAT : Launched in 1974, Oman TV has been a key player in shaping the nation’s media landscape and advancing Oman’s cultural, social, and political identity.
Over the past five decades, Oman TV has evolved from its humble beginnings – offering limited broadcasts in Muscat with local news and educational content – to a leading national broadcaster with global reach. The channel has undergone multiple phases of growth, including expanding its coverage to all governorates in the 1980s, transitioning to digital broadcasting in the 1990s, and launching satellite and specialized channels in the 2000s.

It is pertinent to note that in 1990, with the onset of the digital transformation phase, Oman TV began using digital broadcasting technologies to enhance the quality of image and sound. It worked to improve the quality of production, by launching talk shows covering political, economic and social issues.

As part of the 50th celebration, key figures, including H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al Harrasi, Minister of Information, and H.E. Mohammed bin Saeed Al Balushi, Undersecretary of the Ministry, reflected on the channel’s role in strengthening national identity, promoting Omani heritage, and supporting the ongoing development of the country.
From the first colour broadcasts to the introduction of HD technology and the MENOS system for regional news distribution, Oman TV has kept pace with technological advancements while maintaining its mission to educate, inform, and entertain the public. Special channels like Oman Culture and Oman Live have allowed for a diverse range of content, while the station’s digital presence has expanded its reach through social media and streaming platforms.
