Muscat: This collaboration was the focal point of a meeting held today between Dr. Siham bint Salem Al-Sinani, CEO of UMC, and Dr. Hanan Balkhi, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.
The discussions centered on various avenues of cooperation aimed at boosting the capabilities of health professionals in the region. Both parties reviewed initiatives that could leverage Omani expertise in medical education, scientific research, and health services.
Dr. Al-Sinani emphasized UMC’s commitment to delivering high-quality medical services in line with international standards, noting the institution’s dedication to continuous innovation in research and academic training. She stated, highlighting the center’s role in hosting researchers, publishing scientific papers, and offering targeted training courses to share specialized knowledge and expertise with medical professionals across the Middle East.

Dr. Balkhi articulated the WHO’s focus on fostering collaboration with Oman to enhance regional health initiatives. She praised the country’s medical expertise and desired to share Oman’s successful health experiences on a broader scale.
She stressed the organization’s efforts to localize Arab competencies in the medical field and ensure the sustainability of health services in the countries of the region.
During her visit, Dr. Balkhi, accompanied by a delegation, toured the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre. The delegation explored the center’s state-of-the-art therapeutic and diagnostic services, including a radiotherapy department equipped with cutting-edge technology. The center uniquely offers prostate cancer treatment through the implantation of radioactive seeds, setting a high standard in the region.
The delegation also observed the advanced research capabilities of the center, including its Research Laboratories Department, which conducts genetic testing for cancer patients, and the Pharmacy Department, which prepares specialized pharmaceutical treatments in a highly controlled environment.
