MUSCAT : The 31-year-old defender had recently signed with Serie A club Como but faced an unfortunate setback. He suffered a knee injury during his debut match against Sampdoria in the Italian Cup last month. Despite a promising start to his stint in Italy, Varane’s injury marked the end of his playing days.

Varane’s impact on the game is undeniable. He was pivotal in France’s 2018 World Cup victory, where his standout defensive performances earned him recognition as one of the tournament’s finest defenders. Notably, he scored a crucial header against Uruguay in the quarterfinals, contributing to his five international goals throughout his career.

Reflecting on his journey, Varane shared on Instagram, “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”

A talented ball-playing defender, Varane was renowned for his exceptional positional awareness and ability to read the game. His defensive partnership with Samuel Umtiti in 2018 was key to France’s success, showcasing a blend of skill and composure.

Throughout his club career, Varane collected an impressive array of trophies, including four Champions League titles and three Spanish league titles with Real Madrid. After moving to Manchester United in 2021, he made 95 appearances but struggled with injuries, limiting his contributions.

Having already stepped back from international duty following the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, where he collapsed from exhaustion in extra time, Varane leaves behind a legacy of determination and excellence in the beautiful game.
