Muscat: Veteran Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma, revered for her iconic “screen mother” roles, passed away at a private hospital on Friday. She was 79 years old and had been battling cancer for a long time.
Ponnamma, who started her acting career in Malayalam drama during the late 1950s, graced the screen in over 700 films, cementing her legacy in Malayalam cinema. Most renowned for her motherly roles, she portrayed the matriarch in films spanning generations of Malayalam actors.
In recent years, Ponnamma’s health had deteriorated due to age-related ailments, and she had been under expert medical care at the hospital. Her final film appearance was in Aanum Pennum, released in 2021.
