MUSCAT : Situated about 50 kilometers from the city center, Wasit forms the eastern gateway to the Wilayat, lying at the crossroads of Al Buraimi and Sohar, and boasts a strategic geographical and historical significance.

The village is renowned for its rich combination of natural beauty and deep-rooted heritage. Wasit is surrounded by expansive agricultural lands, lush with palm trees and a variety of crops, creating picturesque landscapes that attract visitors from far and wide. The serene rural environment, coupled with the moderate climate throughout the year, makes Wasit a prime destination for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature.

Sulaiman bin Ali Al Shamsi, a local resident, highlighted that Wasit is a center for agricultural activity, particularly known for its palm cultivation. This agricultural focus not only supports the local economy but also provides a vital source of dates, a staple product of the village. Additionally, Wasit cultivates a range of fruits and vegetables, including mangoes and citrus trees, as well as grains and animal feed. The Wasit Falaj, drawing from the waters of Wasit Valley, plays a crucial role in irrigating these crops, ensuring the village’s agricultural success and contributing to its self-sufficiency.

The village also holds historical and cultural significance. Humaid bin Rashid Al Zaidi, Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in Al Buraimi Governorate, noted that Wasit is home to the Wasit archaeological site, which features artifacts from the second millennium BC. This site has yielded a collection of unique finds, including soapstone vessels, bronze arrowheads, and other historical relics.

Wasit’s historical depth is further reflected in its five old neighbourhoods – Al Ghuwair, Al Mashab, Al Aqaba, Al Ghor, and Al Rayb — as well as its five historical mosques: Al-Rashidat Mosque, Awlad Qalib Mosque, Bin Habib Mosque (Matrah Manea), Awlad Hilal Mosque, and Harat Al Rayb Mosque. These landmarks highlight the village’s cultural richness and its deep historical roots.
