Muscat – One of the season’s standout events will be a two-part concert featuring renowned Indian classical musician Nishat Khan on October 30 and 31, 2024. Khan, a distinguished sitar virtuoso, will open the concert with his mesmerizing performance of traditional Indian ragas.
Nishat Khan, hailed as one of the foremost exponents of the sitar, comes from a lineage of seven generations of musicians. His family’s deep-rooted connections to Indian classical music trace back to the Mughal courts. Khan first captivated audiences at the age of seven and by sixteen was performing at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall with the legendary Ravi Shankar in attendance. His notable achievements include a Radio Mirchi Music Award for ‘Song of the Year’ in 2019 and a celebrated performance of his sitar symphony “Gate of the Moon” at the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms in 2013.
The second half of the concert will feature the European Philharmonia, conducted by Walter Proost, which will infuse the evening with symphonic grandeur.
Khan’s performance at the Royal Opera House Muscat will not only highlight his classical prowess but also his versatility. Over the years, he has ventured into Bollywood film scoring, collaborated with visual artist Anish Kapoor, and performed with diverse artists including violinist Vanessa Mae and flamenco guitarist Paco Peña. His work spans various genres, including Gregorian chant, Western classical music, and abstract jazz, having collaborated with acclaimed figures such as John McLaughlin, Philip Glass, Evelyn Glennie, and Django Bates.
