MUSCAT : The event, held in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), aims to fine-tune policies that boost women’s contribution to Oman’s development.

Hosted by the Directorate General of Family Development and spearheaded by the Women’s Affairs Department, it evaluates global gender-related indicators to inform Oman’s strategies for women’s development. Wadha bint Salem Al Alawi, Director of the Women’s Affairs Department, emphasized that the Social Work Strategy of the Ministry of Social Development (2016-2025) serves as a foundation for new policies aimed at enhancing women’s roles in family and society.

Nadia Khalifa, ESCWA’s Regional Advisor for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, highlighted the importance of global indices like the Global Gender Gap Index and the World Bank’s Special Index on Women, Business, and the Law in measuring progress on gender equality. Khalifa noted that these tools offer valuable insights into the status of women worldwide, touching on areas such as education, health, economic participation, and political involvement.

ESCWA has introduced an integrated project that provides countries with interactive tools to improve their performance on global gender indicators. The project also offers an opportunity to learn from the successful policies of other nations.

The workshop includes 10 working sessions covering topics such as the Indicators Simulation Tool for Policymakers in the Arab World, the United Nations Human Development Index, and the Global Index for Women, Peace, and Motherhood.
